Curly “Ponytail” Foliage on a Swollen Trunk

Ponytail Palm is one of those plants that makes people smile at first glance. A swollen, bulbous base tapers into a slender trunk, crowned with a fountain of long, ribbon-like leaves that spill over the sides like a green ponytail. Despite its common name, it isn’t a true palm at all, but a caudex-forming succulent native to Mexico, which has evolved to store water in its thick base. The look is part desert sculpture, part whimsical houseplant, and it fits just as well on a sunny windowsill as it does styled on a plant stand.

Slow, Compact Growth, and Long-Lived

Indoors, Ponytail Palm is slow-growing, which makes it a fantastic long-term companion plant. Young plants have a single trunk and a tight tuft of foliage, while older specimens gradually thicken their base and may branch into multiple heads over time. In containers inside the home, most plants typically top out at around 3–4 feet tall, although very old specimens in large pots can reach 5–6 feet. Because it grows slowly and stays relatively narrow, it’s easy to tuck into corners, tabletops, or grouped displays without worrying that it will outgrow the space overnight.

Bright Light and Infrequent Watering is all it requires

Think of Ponytail Palm as more of a succulent than a palm when it comes to care. It thrives in bright, indirect light and happily basks in a bit of gentle direct sun, especially morning or late-afternoon rays. A bright east or south window is ideal; in lower light, it will survive, but growth slows dramatically, and the trunk may elongate rather than stay stout. Plant it in a very well-draining mix—such as cactus or succulent soil, or potting mix heavily amended with sand and perlite—so that excess water runs through quickly and never lingers around the roots.

Watering is where Ponytail Palm really earns its “set it and forget it” reputation. The caudex stores water, so you’ll want to let the soil dry out completely between waterings, then soak thoroughly and drain well. In most indoor settings, that means watering every 2–4 weeks, less in low light or winter, and a bit more in bright, warm conditions. It prefers typical household temperatures of around 65–80°F and average humidity, shrugging off dry indoor air that would bother more finicky tropicals. Overwatering is just about the only way to truly get into trouble with this plant—if the base ever feels soft or the leaves pull out easily, it’s a sign the roots have stayed wet too long.

Pet-Safe Personality Plant for Home or Office

In the “indoor landscape,” Ponytail Palm is pure personality. Use it as a quirky focal point on a plant shelf, as a sculptural accent on a low stool, or lined up in multiples for a desert-inspired vignette. It pairs beautifully with cacti, snake plants, and other drought-tolerant houseplants, adding a softer, playful texture to an otherwise spiky or architectural grouping. And because it’s considered non-toxic to cats, dogs, and even horses, you can relax a bit if curious paws can’t resist playing with those tempting, dangling leaves.

Good Quality Toy, but Not a Hit with My Dogs
I am a bit unsure about this toy. Unfortunately, my dogs do not seem to enjoy it very much. I thought the blueberry apple scent would make it more appealing, but they tend to lose interest almost as quickly as they start playing with it. I was hoping this would be something we could use for games like tug of war, but it just has not held their attention. That said, I may just have picky dogs, so this could be a different experience for others. The reason I gave it two stars instead of one is because the quality is actually quite nice. It feels well made and has a good overall design. However, I would be a little cautious giving it to aggressive chewers, as it seems a bit on the softer side. For dogs that are more gentle with their toys, it would likely be a better fit. The size is also great, and it has a lot of potential. It just has not gotten much use in our house, likely due to my dogs not being fans of the flavor. Overall, if you have picky pups like mine, this may not be the best choice. But for less selective or gentler dogs, it could still be a solid option

Stretchy, but Smaller & Softer Than Expected; Berry Fragrance Dominates; May be Best 4 Puppies
I was directed to read guidelines that were on the internet, prior to use. I was not expecting that and that was a big turn-off. Basically, it's all about liability, this product has the possibility of being torn apart and I am basically warned that if a piece is chewed off, that's bigger than a grain of rice, to toss, this. I was repeatedly reminded, again and again, and again that pet safety was my responsibility. Yeah, I know that. All these suggestions and warnings should have been made clearer in the listing. Is this built to flex? Yes. Does it bend? Yes. Does it stretch? Yes. Is this rugged? That's open to debate, based on the users, for a puppy, to some degree, but their teeth are very sharp. Is this soft on teeth? I don't disagree. Does this have a durable design? Depends on the user. Floats in water? I do not doubt it. Does this have an enticing scent? For a human, yes, for a pet? Depends if your pet loves berries. This is no pigs ear/bone, so, chewing is not a natural draw that I saw, which I think may be better, because this is soft and easier to tear to pieces than expected. To motivate the first time, I found it best to initiate the tug of war, but this is smaller than I envisioned too, causing me to have to bend considerably to participate. A tennis ball in a tube sock is longer. A two-dog tug of war works best with this. Nevertheless, it's a better toy than teaching pooch to have a battle using clothing, avoiding future attractions to my socks. There is some flexibility to this. Durability is an issue. I think this would have been more interesting if it had been made out of rawhide. It does have a comfortable grip, for a human, but the toy pays a price for that with what I would consider fragility. The berry fragrance dominates, it's nice for a human, but sorry, it ain't no bacon aroma. It's like a thick heavy rubber hose. Value? In hindsight, I just do not see the value I was expecting. I mean really, a grain of rice warning not to use. Durability at issue in my eyes. Country of origin? Vietnam. Is this perfect? Not in my opinion. Rating? A strong three (3) stars at best in my eyes. This is not for a tough chewer. I have to constantly monitor its condition. It does succeed as a tug toy, but it has more limitations that I was expecting. I hope my thoughts added a bit of information.

Bully proof?!
Size: 5 in
We have the cutest little pit/lab mix who destroys stuffed toys in about two seconds flat. It’s always a HUNT to find toys he won’t instantly shred. This brand has some of the best! They were in FiveBelow for a while and it was the only brand that stood up to him initially. He finally got through the first only after MONTHS so we bought a few back ups and they’re still going strong months later! They’re also not super heavy so these end up being the toys we play fetch with most often! 100% will be buying more in this line in the future!

Great Option
Size: 5 in
When this chew arrived, it immediately became a favorite. It seems sturdy and is soft enough to be dental friendly.
